Got time for a chat?
Human (me): “Move over Alexa and Siri. ChatGPT has much more depth and time for me. Ok, so ChatGPT doesn’t know the sound of my voice but it understands me, it remembers my patterns. I can have a conversation ( as long as I type) and it doesn’t get annoyed when I make a wrong turn. “
AI: “Alexa, Siri - it's time to move aside. ChatGPT has more depth and takes more of my time. I don't need to use my voice because this chatbot understands me and remembers my habits. Even if I make a wrong turn in our conversation, it doesn't get frustrated - all I have to do is type away!”
ChatGPT didn’t quite get my playful intent and missed some nuances ( “has time for me” was about spending time, not taking time and “wrong turn” implied driving instructions) when I asked for a rewrite. But that’s where human guidance plays a role. It’s all the expanded possibilities that has marketers in a swoon over ChatGPT. There are numerous possibilities for SEO, content creation, social media posts, customer assistance, email marketing and more listed here: how-marketers-can-use-chatgpt
But with those possibilities comes a host of red flags. ChatGPT gets its info from the internet so marketers need to insure that their data is even more secure. ChatGPT may prove to be great for initiating an idea or fighting the dreaded “blank page” syndrome in content creation but content needs some emotion to avoid being formulaic. This article from Forbes reviews some potential pitfalls. Brands-use-chatgpt
ChatGPT is still in its very early stages but it will be interesting to see where and how this “Generative Pretrained Transformer” evolves and transforms the marketing world.
“And the Oscar goes to …”
It used to be that the Oscars Award show was a major audience viewing occasion for Brand marketers. Similar to the Super Bowl, the show afforded Brands the opportunity to go beyond :30 commercials and do innovative “red carpet” promotions, product placements, viewing party sponsorhips or even better — be in the coveted gift-bags-given-to-oscar-nominees. After its worst year during Covid, the show rebounded to 15 million viewers in 2022 but still far from the 40 million viewers of 2014. Last year, social media chatter drove an increase in viewers following the infamous “slap”. The Academy would prefer to engage viewers in a less sensational manner and will be utilizing more interactive technology such as QR codes which will appear before commercial breaks for viewers to watch vignettes about the nominees with behind-the-scenes footage and photos. Also Rihanna, fresh from her showstopping Super Bowl Halftime, is scheduled to sing her nominated song, “Lift Me Up” in the hope of attracting her following. NYT academy-awards-broadcast
March Madness
This year a number of our MSMI students: Chih-Fei Chan, Raphael Jorge, Luyao Hao, Jiahua Huang, Shubh Mahtani, Vidushi Rai, Jiaqi Shou, Hasrat Sohi, Ai-LingWoo and more have joined forces and entered the 10th Annual March Madness Data Crunch competition sponsored by Deloitte and led by Professor RP Raghupathi, PhD. Teams will need to apply all their analytical skills as they work with data from past NCAA Men's basketball tournaments to predict the results of this year's tournament. They also need to understand the science of bracketology and be familiar with the special lingo that comes with March Madness. Student winners will be announced at the end of the tournament in early April. We wish them great success. Even if you’re not competing, you can check out this live bracket dashboard to keep track of your own March Madness picks.
