MSMI on the move
The MSMI cohort was on the move this past month. They’ve been winning competitions, enjoying Spring and enhancing their leadership skills.
Starting with the Finals of the annual Deloitte March Madness Data Crunch competition, students from across the university were challenged to predict the outcome of the NCAA Basketball tournament using different modeling tools and data from past tournaments. Shikha Gautam MSMI’24 enjoyed participating because it “pushed her out of her comfort zone”. Wini Kataria MSMI ‘24 and her team, The Data Dunkers 1, received an honorable mention for their predictive model which accurately forecast the Final teams of UConn and Purdue.
Later in the month, Hiya Bagadia, Krishali Parmar, Shubhalakshmi (Shubha) Joshi, and Tanya Gujjula traveled crosstown to participate in the Baruch Zicklin School of Business Case competition. Competing against business schools from the metro area, Pace, NYU and others, the team developed a strategy to transform the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. They leveraged advanced analytics and AI to streamline operations and develop innovative monetization strategies and loyalty programs to maximize the MTA's digital assets and enhance the customer experience.
Then it was off to the Bronx to see the annual NYBotanical Garden Orchid Show. This year, the theme was Florals in Fashion with the dazzling orchid displays arranged to mimic a runway.
The spectacular displays and arrangements were enjoyed by students, faculty and returning MSMI’23 alums Kiki Shou, Rashi Shah and Santiago Ablaza who offered support, encouragement and lots of smiles.
Closing out the month, 36 MSMI students celebrated completion of their six-step Responsible Business Leadership program. The Fall/Spring program under the leadership of Elizabeth Ostler and Ally Callaghan provides students with the skills and tools to lead responsibly and effectively. Arjun Trivedi describes the coaching sessions and retreats as “enlightening” and “transformative”.
This impressive group is ready to put the RBL values into action —- Shailly Akhani, Hiya Bagadia, Camila Baeza, Prutha Chavan, Ashna Chopra, Zheyu Deng, Emily Dietzel, Shikha Gautam, Tanya Gujjula, Maria Hernandez, Vrinda Jodhwani, Vidhi Jain, Shubhalakshmi (Shubha) Joshi, Dhanya Kasthuri, Christian Kaykaty, Aolki Kurumi, Anu Lakhani, Yashaswini Kataria, Katelyn Keane, Anjali Kumar, Maria Jose Larrain, Odette Ofosu-Siaw, Krishali Parmar, Elizabeth (Yoo Jung) Park, Rhea Patil, Amelia Semler, Rhea Shah, Zil Shah, Franny Shea, Shruti, Shubhi Shukla, Simran Tekwani, Maria Vittoria Tullio, Arjun Trivedi, Aashumi Varaiya and Ana Gomez Wallis .
Spotlight on MSMI alums
Our alums are also competing and winning. Jason (Yuan) Wang GSB’20 MSMI ‘21, McCannNY Strategist, returned to LC to speak with MS students in the Measuring Marketing Effectiveness course about the different insights and strategy tools McCann utilized to develop Prudential’s communications campaign. Soon after, the McCann team learned the Prudential campaign is an Effie Award winner - the actual level Gold, Bronze or Silver to be announced very soon. The Effies are one of the most prestigious awards in marketing because they celebrate results and effectiveness more than creativity. The judges do not view the actual campaigns until the final rounds. This means the written submission must be artfully crafted to weave a narrative that connects the goals to the insights, the data and the results to standout and impress the judges. Although it is a whole team of creatives, producers, and account managers who work on developing an effective campaign, it was Jason, utilizing his data-driven storytelling skills, who penned a compelling and winning narrative for McCann. Cheers to Jason!
